Rebecca's Design Notes:
This kitchen was a complete remodel – we gutted and started from scratch. The owners have been in the house 15 years…both kids are out of college and on their own…and they really hated the builder kitchen that came with the house. Their style is mid-20th century modern, apparent in the rest of the house. He likes high contrast and drama, and she’d be happy if everything was beige! This design makes both of them happy.

The bar between the kitchen and dining room is just inside from the garage where they enter. There is specific storage in the base cabinet for her handbag, and concealed outlets for recharging cell phones and PDAs.

The design inspiration began with two things; the both liked the idea of black cabinets, and there was a glass tile they both truly loved. |
As both of them like a lot of light, there was a challenge with their desire for black. We decided on a heavily-stained black oak for the base and tall cabinets, and natural cherry for the wall cabinets.
The flooring is perhaps the boldest design element in the room. We drew 5 colors and two textures from Amtico’s solid vinyl line, and did a random modular pattern. Again, I paid attention to proportion of dark and light, wanting to keep the floor from becoming too dark and heavy. |
| We chose a medium value in
the granite counter tops — not too dark because
of visibility. We used the 1x1 glass tile only
on the back splash for two reasons: she didn’t
want to deal with grout on her counters (considering
both cleanability and sanitation), and the it was
quite expensive. Plus, it is more dramatic as an
accent than as a dominant theme. |
